barrett design

The Project  A 1,200 s.f. residence in the middle of the San Luis Valley in southern Colorado.

The Construction Method  Rammed earth walls created entirely of the dirt found onsite, stabilized with a small amount of Portland Cement.

The Systems  100% powered by the sun, with a solar PV system designed to meet all the electrical needs of the home and an evacuated tube solar hot water collector system that will provide both domestic hot water and radiant floor heating.

Imagine if you will finding a pristinely beautiful location and living there, off the grid, harnessing natural energy from the sun in an environment where temperatures sometimes plunge to 50 degrees below zero. Welcome to Alamosa, Colorado in the beautiful San Luis Valley. Home of the Great Sand Dunes National Monument and more natural beauty than most locations could ever dream of. This is Big Sky Country, with an abundance of natural wildlife. But it is also a desert, where rainfall averages around 7" per year. Brutally beautiful, and absolutely serene, Adanado is located at an elevation of 7,600 feet in the largest high Alpine Valley in the world.
